DIRECTOR OF THE H. CAMPBELL AND ELEANOR R. STUCKEMAN SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE AND LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

The Pennsylvania State University is seeking candidates for the position of Director of the H. Campbell and Eleanor R. Stuckeman School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. It is intended that the position will be filled by July 1, 2010. The School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA) is housed in the LEED Gold certified Stuckeman Family Building, is committed to excellence in design, scholarship, environmental stewardship and sustainable practices, and was recently endowed with a $20 million gift. SALA includes nationally ranked and accredited undergraduate and graduate professional degree programs and post-professional degree programs. The faculty comprise fifty tenure, tenure-track, and part-time faculty within the School's two departments, Architecture and Landscape Architecture, and 446 undergraduates and 32 graduates.

The Director of SALA is expected to provide dynamic and visionary leadership and exhibit dedication to advancement in all areas of the School. An energetic, enthusiastic leader will advance a vision for the School in both the University and beyond that addresses increasingly complex problems in a global world. The Director must demonstrate an understanding of contemporary issues and best practices in Architecture, Landscape Architecture and the broader realm of design education. The candidate should also possess the vision and communication skills to work with faculty in curriculum development to address future challenges and opportunities. Candidates for this position should also demonstrate a strong commitment to the core values of this major research university environment through experience in interdisciplinary collaboration, specifically between architecture and landscape architecture, as well as other disciplines. The Director is expected to embrace diversity and pursue engagement of the School with the world in the widest range of developed and disadvantaged settings and will actively represent the School with regional, national and international organizations in each of the disciplines, as well as actively pursuing collaboration with allied professions and disciplines.

The Director works closely with the Dean of the College of Arts and Architecture, the department heads in Architecture and Landscape Architecture, and the faculty, staff and students of SALA to achieve excellence in teaching, research, creative work, and service and to nurturing relationships with alumni and regional practitioners. The successful candidate should be an exemplary leader with an ability to direct a complex organization, dedicated to the wise use of financial resources, and committed to fundraising among the School's diverse communities of supporters. He or she must also be skilled in developing and leading collegial teams of faculty and staff, conversant with the fundamentals of human resource development and committed to the goals of fairness and equity, diversity and affirmative action.

Qualified applicants should demonstrate academic leadership experience in higher education and possess a record of accomplishment in scholarship and/or professional practice that merits appointment at the rank of Full Professor with tenure, including a terminal degree in Architecture, Landscape Architecture or a closely allied discipline. The successful applicant will serve a 5-year renewable term as Director subject to annual reviews from the Dean of the College of Arts and Architecture.
